Apple yesterday previewed iOS 14, iPadOS 14, macOS Big Sur, watchOS 7, tvOS 14, and all five operating systems are jet-packed with features. In addition to those major new features and changes, there are also some hidden ones that went unmentioned.
iOS 14:
- You can now set default third-Party mail and browser apps in iOS and iPadOS 14
- Emoji search is now possible in iOS 14, same interface as the one on the Mac
- Health Checklist in the Health app lets you manage health and safety info in one place
- QuickTake feature expanded to Apple's 2018 iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max
- Maps lets you know nearby speed cameras and red-light cameras along your route
- Updated interface for the magnification feature
- Files app now supports external drives that use APFS encryption
- FaceTime gains a new picture in picture option, lets you do other things while having a call
- Quick toggles for changing video resolution and frame rate now available on all iPhones
- New setting for capture mirrored selfies that reflect the front camera preview
- A new Control Center toggle for Sound Recognition, alert you when certain sounds are detected
- New Sleep Mode Control Center toggle that turns on Do Not Disturb and the screen goes darker
- Favorite HomeKit scenes now show up in the Control Center for quick access
- Podcasts app gained a new Up Next feature and recommended content
- Voice Memos app have a new Enhance Recording feature, which improves the sound quality of the recordings with a tap
- Apps in iOS 14 need to ask permission to find and connect with devices on the local network
- Customizable Home screen settings in the Settings app
- Overhauled Music app, includes a new Autoplay feature that automatically finds new music when you reach the end of a song or a playlist, and Now Playing background shows album art from the current artist playing
- Reminders app introduced a new Quick Entry option as well as smart suggestions
- Photos app gets new options to filter and sort, Captions can be added to photos and videos
- Find My app added supports for third-party products, a hint for AirTag?
HomePod Software:
- Adds support for third-party music services, including Spotify, Pandora, and more
- HomePod will now announce when a HomeKit-connected doorbell has been rung
iPadOS 14
- Widgets in iPadOS 14 limited to Today View in Landscape Mode, widgets in iOS 14 can be pinned on the Home Screen
macOS Big Sur
- Apple no longer uses macOS 10 versions, as macOS Big Sur is listed as version 11.0
- The new WebP image format officially supported for the first time in Safari
tvOS 14:
- You will be able to watch YouTube videos in 4K resolution
- Audio Sharing for AirPods coming to the Apple TV
- Picture in picture support, watch videos and do other things at the same time
- There will be new multiuser support for gaming
- A new option to view HomeKit video feeds
- Supports additional controllers like the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller.
watchOS 7:
- Support for Force Touch dropped in watchOS 7
