Ahead Of iPhone X Launch, Google Unveils Pixel 2 Smartphone, Pixelbook Laptop, And Two New Google Home Speakers

Google today hosted a press event in San Francisco, California, where the company is unveiling its latest generation of Google Home, Android and Chrome OS devices, including updates to its Pixel phones - Pixel 2, and a so-called Pixelbook convertible Chromebook.

First off, The Pixel 2 comes in 5 and 6-inch screen sizes, with the XL model featuring slimmer bezels. It features a bolder look with an aluminum body with a soft sculpted back and premium coating, a glass top, and buttons with a pop of color. Like Samsung Galaxy S8, there's a fingerprint sensor on the back of the device, no headphone jack, and IP67 water resistance.

Active Edge lets user squeeze the side of the Pixel 2 to activate Google Assistant, silence phone calls, and the OLED display is always-on to display notifications and the time (XL models uses a P-OLED display). A fast charging feature allows for 7 hours of charge in 15 minutes. It also carries pretty standard flagship specifications with a Snapdragon 835 processor, and 4GB of RAM.

The Pixel 2 supports the Google Lens feature, first announced back at Google I/O 2017 this May. Using the power of Assistant, Lens can detect what is in the real world around you and provide relevant search results and much more. This will almost definitely land on other phones eventually, but you’ll need a Pixel 2 device to try it first.

As for camera improvements, the Search Giant adds support for Portrait Mode in its new Pixel smartphones, a feature similar to the Portrait Mode in the latest iPhones. However, Portrait Mode on Pixel 2 requires just one camera and is available for both the front and rear cameras. Google says DxO has given the camera a score of 98, while the iPhone 8 Plus received a score of 94.

Pricing for Pixel 2 starts at $649 for 64GB storage. The Pixel 2 XL starts at $849 for 64GB of storage. Pre-orders are available starting today. Google is releasing new wireless Google Pixel Buds alongside the Pixel 2. When connected to Pixel 2 over Bluetooth, they have a wire between the left and right earbuds, unlike the AirPods. Pixel Buds feature real time language translation and are priced at $159.

The Google Home Max and Google Home Mini speakers as well received official unveilings following new product announcements from competitor Sonos earlier today. Home Max, or the best comparison to Apple’s upcoming HomePod speaker, and packs in premium design and stereo sound for $399 (HomePod cost #349).

Lastly, Google introduced the high-end Google Pixelbook, perhaps it's thinnest and lightest laptop they ever made. Pixelbook is 10mm thick and weighs a kilogram, and it can convert from a laptop to a tablet. It has a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Core i5/Core i7 chips, 16GB RAM, up to 512GB storage, built-in Google Assistant, and 10 hours of battery life. The premium priced Chromebook priced of $999.
