Apple Sold Nearly 20 Million Macs Last Year, The World's Fourth-Largest PC Maker In 2017

According to IDC data, the Mac shipments in Q4 2017 were up 7.3% year-on-year, Mac sales increased to nearly 20 million during last year, so that makes Apple to become the world's fourth-largest PC maker in 2017.

The roughly 20 million total is based on Apple's reported Mac sales of 13.9 million units in the first three calendar quarters of the year, while IDC estimate that Apple sold another 5.7 million Macs in the fourth quarter of 2017.

Compare to last year, Apple has officially reported sales of 18.5 million Macs in 2016. The company sold over 20 million Macs in both 2014 and 2015, however, meaning that the year of 2017 was likely not a record-breaking year for the Mac.

According to the IDC chart, Apple leapfrogged Asus and Acer. But the research firm have Apple trailing behind HP, Lenovo, and Dell, which shipped an estimated 58.8 million, 54.8 million, and 41.8 million PCs respectively last year.

The Cupertino headquartered company growth in 2017 was very impressive, part of reason because in WWDC, Apple is able to refresh its MacBook Pro and iMac lineups with the Kaby Lake processors, give the base MacBook Air a slight speed boost, they also launched an all-new iMac Pro, the most powerful Mac ever.

Aside from it, IDC said that growth in the PC market had been largely driven by business demand, rather than by consumer purchases – and most growth was in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
