Apple Accelerating On Its Self-Driving Car Test, With Up To 45 Permits For Autonomous Vehicles

Apple appears to be speeding up on its mysterious self-driving car technology testings over the past two months, reports Financial Times, as the publication includes new data on how many self-driving cars Apple may be testing in California.

According to the figures provided by the California Department of Motor Vehicles, FC says that Apple now has permits for 45 autonomous vehicles, up from 27 in January of the year. It's worth to noted that the permits count topped Tesla’s 39 and Uber’s 29 permits.

It's believed that Apple is ranked second place in terms of testing fleet, still is way behind General Motors subsidiary Cruise Automation, which owns 110 cars. Apple's rival in tech -- Google is testing 24 cars in the state, down from more than 100 last June, the report adds.

Even through Apple hasn’t announced any specific plans that associated with all of its self driving car testing, CEO Tim Cook said that "We're focusing on autonomous systems." It's a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It's probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on," says Cook.
