LG Display Division has become the second Apple OLED supplier, this means that Apple can reduce its dependence on Samsung. At present, Samsung is the only OLED display supplier for iPhone X. To help boost OLED screen mass production, Apple has invested billions of dollars in LG, according to South China Morning Post
Previously, there were reports that LG will supply the OLED of iPhone X Plus that's expected to using a 6.5-inch screen. In today's report, the news was confirmed and mentioned that LG will provide Apple with 2 to 4 million OLED panels. Even though the supply is small, Apple can use this to negotiate with Samsung to lower the price of their OLED panels.
The first OLED screens from LG Display will be used in one model of the new iPhones slated for release this year, the people said. LG Display wants to supply all the screens for that Apple model, though it is not clear it can yet achieve that, one of the people said. The shipment is subject to two layers of approval, the first of which is expected around July, the people said.
In addition to the iPhone X Plus, Apple will also release second-generation of iPhone X and 6.1-inch LCD iPhone this year. Last month, South Korea's ET News claimed that Apple will complete the conversion next year, in which all feature iPhone models will be equipped with OLED screens.
