Former Tesla Engineer Doug Field Joins Apple's Project Titan, As The Company May Soon Launch A New Energy Car

Doug Field once served as Apple's vice president of Mac hardware engineering. It is reported that after being dug away by Tesla for five years, he has now returned to Apple to join Project Titan, Apple's top-secret self-driving project. The news came from John Gruber's Daring Fireball, and it was confirmed by the company's spokesperson Tom Neumayr.

According to Gruber, Field has now joined the Botan Mansfield-led Project Titan. For those who familiar with Apple know that Mansfield was the senior vice president of hardware engineering, after its retirement, he took over Apple's self-driving problem from Steve Zadesky in 2016.

In addition to Tesla, Field also has the background of working as a CTO at Segway (before joining Apple in 2008) and has a solid understanding of transportation technology. Prior to that, Field worked as a vehicle development engineer also lead a team at Ford Motor Company and later as a prototype vehicle designer at DEKA Research & Development.

Since 2014, Apple has been reported to be working on a top-secret self-driving program. It was said that the original plan was for vehicle manufacturing. However, the person in charge was also replaced, and the research and development direction was adjusted. The Titan project was put on hold and changed to the autonomous driving system.

However, a Tesla Chinese dealer says that Apple may soon launch a new energy car, as the prototype should have come out, and it will be delivered at the end of this month. Because of it too secret, even the internal directors can't see it. Apple's secrecy work is doing so well because Apple has full capital guarantees, which means they have plenty of money.

"They are likely to be as confidential as when Apple's first iPhone came out. After the release, they would quickly be occupied the high point", the person further states that "In marketing, Apple is trying to copy the strategy that once used on its first iPhone. I am very optimistic about Apple Car, have money, technologies and ideas." (Via Sina)
