Japan Display Expected To Supply OLED Screens For Apple Watch Series 5 This Fall

According to Reuters, Japan Display will supply OLED screens for this year's new Apple Watch. For JDI, winning the Apple order is quite astonishing news, because, in the fiscal year ending March 2018, more than half of JDI's revenue came from Apple. At that time, Apple's demand for LCD screens was immense. Just in the last two years, iPhone X, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max were replaced with OLED screens, which had a significant impact on JDI.

At the same time, a report from Digitimes yesterday alleges that in 2020, the Apple iPhone lineup will all be embracing the OLED display technology, completely abandoning the LCD. In order to better produce OLED screens, JDI is seeking new investors and plans to raise $990 million. For Apple, the company likewise hopes that the OLED supply chain can be diversified. Currently, the OLED screens of iPhone X, iPhone XS, and XS Max are all from Samsung.
Japan Display Inc will begin to supply organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens for the Apple Watch later this year, two sources said, a breakthrough for the cash-strapped company whose late shift to OLED has cost it orders from Apple.

The supply deal would mark Japan Display’s foray into the OLED display market, the two sources familiar with the matter said, declining to be identified because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
As far as Apple Watch Series 5 concerned, TF International analysts Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the updated model released this fall will be featured with a new ceramic case, which may indicate the return of Apple Watch Edition. New processor and support for Bluetooth 5 is also expected for the upcoming update.
