Apple is allegedly discussing with Taiwanese touchscreen-related manufacturer GIS to bring in-screen Touch ID to the 2020 iPhones and the possibility of GIS supplying Mini LED technology to Apple, in line with Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's claims made yesterday.
The report from Economic Daily News cited industry insiders that the next-generation iPhone is likely to use Qualcomm's ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner. GIS is responsible for linking JDI and Qualcomm, and plays a key role in the production of components for the fingerprint scanner. Through cooperation with Qualcomm, GIS will be able to supply necessary components, the report says.
Generally, ultrasonic fingerprint scanners are thought to have better fingerprint recognition than optical ones, for example, higher accuracy and require only thinner material. Samsung has so far launched two flagship smartphones this year, S10 and Note 10, of both have adopted such a technology as a result of their partnership with GIS.
This is not the first time that we have heard 2020 iPhones would come with under-display Touch ID sensor, with Ming-Chi Kuo and other analysts are also expecting Apple to release iPhones with both Face ID and under-display fingerprint authentication in 2020 or 2021, not mentioning several patents filed by the company have indicated its continued interest in implementing under-screen solutions.
And it just so happen that Qualcomm today held the Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii, in which we saw the chipmaker unveiled a 30x20mm in-display fingerprint sensor for smartphones, claims to be 17x larger than the one in the Galaxy S10. Also on the stage, Qualcomm announced its next-generation 5G-capable smartphone chipsets - Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765.
