Apple Joins FIDO Alliance Seeking To Promote Authentication Standards

Last week, Apple officially became a member of the FIDO Alliance. The FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance is an online Fast Identity authentication alliance that aims to reduce the world's over-reliance on passwords.

The goal of the FIDO Alliance is to meet market needs and online verification requirements. Members of the FIDO Alliance will help to define market needs and contribute to the FIDO Open Agreement. The agreement is the first open industry standard for online and digital authentication to improve security, protect privacy and promote user experience.

In addition to Apple, other technology companies joined the Alliance include Amazon, ARM, Facebook, Google, Intel, Microsoft, and Samsung, as well as various large financial companies, including American Express, ING, Mastercard, Paypal, Visa, and Rich Countries bank.

According to the FIDO website, it's supported in Windows 10 and Android platforms, and Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Apple Safari (preview) web browsers for a secure and fast login experiences across websites and apps.

The Fido Alliance is looking to replace passwords with standard authentication, similar to Apple's two-step verification process. Once you log in to your account, a verification code and confirmation message will be sent to your device. Towards complete the verification, it will prompt you to confirm or enter the verification code.
