Apple’s annual fall event will be here before you know it, and a research report from Wedbush Securities written by analysts Daniel Ives, Strecker Backe, and Ahmad Khalil said that Apple may release a cheaper version of the iPhone 12 that only supports 4G cellular network in early 2021.
Wedbush initially expected Apple to launch a hybrid version of the iPhone 12 that supports 4G and 5G this fall. But the firm revised its forecast after a recent Asian supply chain survey, and now they anticipate Apple to launch multiple 5G iPhones in the fall, and a cheaper 4G model in early 2021.
Daniel Ives, one of the analysts, told Business Insider that Apple may launch this 4G-only version around February. This version of the iPhone 12 is also expected to be cheaper than the 5G model launched in September. Other details about the device are unclear, but Ives predicts that Apple may set the price of the non-5G iPhone at around $800.
He also said that Apple is unlikely to increase the price of this year's iPhone, even for models that support 5G. Apple may launch some 5G models that are less than $1,000 and other models that are similar in price to the iPhone 11 Pro, which echoes his prediction last month.
Last fall, Apple launched the $700 iPhone 11, which is $50 cheaper than the $750 starting price of the iPhone XR when it was first released back in 2018. According to data from market research firm Omdia, iPhone 11 is the world's most popular smartphone in the first quarter of 2020, surpassing iPhone XR.
Recently, Apple launched the $400 iPhone SE in April, which has already paid off for the tech giant based in Cupertino, California. Apple said on its recent earnings call that Apple attributed its iPhone segment’s growth in the third fiscal quarter to factors such as the outstanding sales performance of iPhone SE.
Apple is expected to release four versions of the iPhone 12 this fall, and it is said that all of these versions will support 5G networks. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg also believes that Apple may introduce new size options and adopt a design closer to the iPad Pro.
