According to The Information, Apple will open full access to iPhone's NFC chip for third-party developers in iOS 12. It can not only used for mobile payments, but also be allowing users to securely unlock doors.


Apple started this work by adding the Core NFC framework on iOS 11 but with limited functionality. The intention of Apple is to allow third-party developers to store sensitive information through the iPhone's built-in Secure Enclave instead of Bluetooth, which can significantly increase popularity.

The change to the near-field communication, or NFC, chip, which is expected to be announced next month, could pave the way for people to use iPhones for other security-sensitive interactions, from paying transit fares and opening car doors to verifying their identity in other ways. 

The report also mentioned that Apple has expanded the feature in the Apple Park campus security system developed in cooperation with HID Global, in which Apple employees already use the iPhone to access Apple Park's offices.

Indeed, WWDC 2018 about to kick off on June 4th. As for what changes will be introduced to iOS 12, let's wait and see!
