In an internal document from Apple that was sent to an Authorized Service Provider., Apple confirmed that the membrane used in the 2018 MacBook Pros keyboard is a mechanical structure to prevent debris from entering the butterfly keyboard.
Since the introduction of the Butterfly keyboard, several users have found that the keys of the keyboard are often unresponsive, sticky, and not functioning. Last week, iFixit found a silicone barrier under the keycaps of the new MacBook Pro keyboard, which was speculated to prevent debris from entering. Apple did not directly admit this design flaw but mentioned that the new MacBook Pro is less noisy in typing so the silicone barrier can lower the sound.
The keyboard has a membrane under the keycaps to prevent debris from entering the butterfly mechanism. The procedure for the space bar replacement has also changed from the previous model. Repair documentation and service videos will be available when keycap parts begin shipping.
