Future iPhones To Use Samsung's New LPDDR5 DRAM For Better Performance And Battery Life

Samsung today announced that it has completed functional testing and verification of the industry's first 10nm 8-gigabit LPDDR5 DRAM. LPDDR5 DRAM is specifically designed for AI applications that are equipped with 5G smartphones.

Samsung said that the prototype LPDDR5 DRAM boasts data rate of up to 6.5Gbps, 1.5 times faster than the LPDDR4X used in iPhone X and other flagship smartphones. At the same time, LPDDR5 DRAM supports all-new sleep mode and other features that can reduce power consumption by 30%, which will most likely help to extend the battery life of mobile devices.

Based on its industry-leading bandwidth and power efficiency, the LPDDR5 will be able to power AI and machine learning applications, and will be UHD-compatible for mobile devices worldwide.

Apple, on the other hand, will use Samsung's LPDDR5 DRAM in the future iPhones, which means further performance improvements and increased battery life is on the table. Samsung has said it will mass-produce the next generation of DRAM, however, the time has not yet been determined.
