PSA: ECG App Can't Be Enabled Outside Of U.S., And Requires You To Be 22 Years Old To Use It

Apple's watchOS 5.1.2 software update released today enabled the ECG feature of the Apple Watch Series 4, but as Apple described in the release note that in addition to the US mainland and Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands, users from other countries and regions can't activate ECG app on their Watches.

Many of the features on Apple devices were initially used only in the United States, but international users can usually simply switch the zone to the US, but not this time considering it needs regulatory approval before it makes available to that country, or else Apple will face serious consequences.

According to Apple, the ECG app and irregular heart rate notifications are all regulatorily required feature on Apple Watch. These two features have been approved by the U.S. FDA for the De Novo classification and are available to users who are 22 and older in the United States. It also stated that users who have already diagnosed atrial fibrillation should not use the app.

It is unclear whether the feature will expand to elsewhere in the future, but there are rumors that Canada may be the next country to support it. Apple's AW4 is sold worldwide, all with the heart sensor necessary for ECG functionality, but requires software and regulator permission beforehand.
