Apple To Introduce Apple Watch With Sleep-Tracking Features Next Year

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is actively developing sleep-tracking feature for Apple Watch. At the moment, it's not clear whether the sleep tracking-feature requires new hardware support or is implemented directly through the watchOS software update.

The report said that in the past few months, Apple employees have been testing it. The company plans to launch the functionality for Apple Watch next year. Apple acquired Beddit, a sleep-tracking hardware startup, in 2017, and Beddit's products are still sold through the App Store. After Beddit was acquired, rumors have suggested that Apple will integrate sleep-tracking capabilities for Apple Watch.

Currently, Apple does not provide the sleep-tracking feature on the Apple Watch, but some third-party applications, such as AutoSleep, offers the feature and sync sleep data to iPhone Health app. Competitors of Apple Watch, such as Fitbit Versa, have supported sleep-tracking for many years.

It's unclear how Apple solves the battery problem. Currently, Apple recommends charging Apple Watch every night. If the wearable device supports sleep tracking, users can't charge it while they sleep. Therefore, future Apple Watches may integrate larger batteries to solve this issue, or Apple Watch adds a sleep mode that saves power while tracking sleep.
