Senior Engineer Of Apple Departs The Company, Led The A7 ~ A12X Development

According to people familiar with the matter (Via CNET), Gerard Williams III, a senior chip engineer who has worked for Apple for 9 years, left Apple in February. Williams has been leading on the core design of Apple's A-series chips, such as the world's first 64-bit mobile processor A7 on the iPhone 5s.

Williams joined Apple in 2010, previously worked for 12 years at ARM. During his time at ARM, he runs many traditional ARM chip projects as well as projects such as Cortex-A8 and Cortex-A15. According to their LinkedIn Profile, before Williams joining the ARM design team, he was responsible for Texas Instruments who helped develop the TI TMS470 microcontroller project.

The report says that Williams' responsibilities have grow much higher, not only he oversees the design work of CPU cores, but also the component layout on the Apple SoC chip. With the departure of Apple's other SoC architecture, Manu Gulati, who left Apple in 2017, Williams' responsibilities were considerably expanding.

Williams reports directly to Apple's head of Hardware Technologies Johny Srouji, and his departure is indeed a big loss for the company. The reason why Williams left Apple is unclear, but it is reported that he has not yet taken up jobs at other companies.
