According to people familiar with the matter who spoke to WSJ, Apple Music surpasses Spotify's number of paid subscribers in the United States, which occurred in early 2019; where Apple had more than 28 million US users in February, and Spotify had 26 million US paying users, exclude those in the Apple Music's free-trial or Spotify free tier.


WSJ report stated that Apple Music saw faster growth rate than Spotify, with a monthly growth rate of 2.6% to 3%, while Spotify is 1.5% to 2%.
