Apple To Release Devices That Uses Its In-House 5G Modems In 2021

Apple announced yesterday that it has spent $1 billion to purchase Intel's smartphone modem business. For this reason, Apple not only acquired about 2,200 employees from Intel but also received a large number of patents, equipment, and other assets. Apple's acquisition will promote the company's self-developed 5G modem business, and may even assist it to release appropriate products ahead of time.

According to a news source quoted by Reuters, Apple plans to release devices that use its in-house 5G modem in 2021. The report did not mention which Apple device will be the first to use its own 5G modem technology, but there is a certain risk in using it directly on the iPhone, Apple is likely to slowly implement the 5G modem in a step-by-step manner, so it's believed they will adopt it on the iPad first.

Following the adoption of 5G on iPad, then Apple may start with the low-end iPhone, and high-end models will still be using Qualcomm's 5G modems until the company builds enough confidence in its products. Even if the research and development progress of the self-developed 5G modem is not up to expectations, it will not impact the iPhone's normal sale, as Apple signed a settlement contract with Qualcomm, in which they will continue to provide 5G modems to them.

On the other side, the 2019 iPhone will not use 5G technology but rather 4G. With a multi-year supply agreement with Qualcomm, the 2020 iPhone is expected to use Qualcomm's 5G technology.
