Last week, Apple introduced the new 16-inch MacBook Pro, equipped with AMD's latest Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card. We, of course, expects the GPU's performance should be higher than Vega 20, and a new piece by Laptop Reviews and News website Notebookcheck does indicate that such is the case.
The AMD Radeon Pro 5500M's Metal Benchmark score is a significant improvement over the Radeon Pro 560X on the MacBook Pro 15 released in mid-2018, but the upgrade is not super huge compares to the Vega 20: about 9% faster than the Radeon Pro Vega 20 and 55% faster than the Radeon Pro 560X.
In terms of specific benchmark scores, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M scored 25,528 points, Vega 20 scored 23,515 points, and Radeon Pro 560X scored 16577 points. Noted that Geekbench Metal is designed for Apple products using the Metal graphics API, meaning this result may be different on PC than on Mac.
Beyond that, a new video by tech YouTuber Dave Lee finds that the new 16-inch MacBook Pro made a loads of improvements in the new thermal system, graphics hardware, etc. Lee points out that in both gaming and video rendering, Apple's ultra-powerful notebook showed a steady improvements, but also disappointed the lack of Wi-Fi 6 and a 1080p FaceTime camera.
Aside from some performance gains, according to MacRumors, Apple reveals that the 16-inch MacBook Pro includes a new lid angle sensor" that is designed to detect the opening and closing of the notebook and the exact location of the lid. Essentially, It could provide a clever way for the company to monitor how often the lid has been opened, closed, or changed in situations where the screen or flex cables need to be repaired.
