Although there have been reports that Apple aims to release augmented reality headset as early as 2020, a fresh piece suggests that such headsets may take several years to hit the market.
The Information report exposes that Apple's current goal is to launch augmented reality headsets by 2022 and then introduce "sleeker" augmented reality glasses by 2023. Per the article, Mike Rockwell, Apple's Vice President of AR and Virtual Reality (VR) ventures, shared the timeline with at least 1,000 Apple Park employees in an internal October briefing.
The paywalled report said that Apple's AR gadget is similar to Facebook's Oculus Quest Virtual Reality Headset released earlier this year, code-named N301, with both augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) capabilities, and using an external camera to capture the user's environment. Apple expects to emphasize on lightweight fabrics and materials to ensure that the head-mounted device can be worn comfortably.
According to the executive, the technology will be able to map the surfaces, edges, and dimensions of rooms with greater accuracy than existing devices on the market. Apple executives went on to say that they are planning to approach third-party software developers as early as 2021 to encourage them to build apps for the product, so chances are the headsets could be previewed ahead of the 2022 launch.
Once Apple had launched the AR headset, it also plans to announce a smaller N421 code-named AR glasses. Unlike the head-mounted devices, AR glasses are designed to be worn for extended periods. The prototypes that are seen appear like high-priced sunglasses with thick frames that can house batteries and chips, said a person familiar with the matter.
Lastly, The Information claims that Apple executives expect the iPhone will be replaced with AR devices in about a decade.
