Before we start pairing your extra Apple Watch to an existing iPhone, here are some things to follow before doing this. Make sure to check both devices are updated to the latest iOS and watchOS version. In addition, in order to pair an Apple Watch Series 1 or later with watchOS 6, you need to have an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13. You will also need a WiFi or cellular connection on iPhone to pair your Apple Watch. In addition, if the pairing process involves with a cellular Apple Watch Series 3 or later, then your carrier should have support for more than one Apple Watch cellular plan to an iPhone.
Let’s start the process now. First, unlock your iPhone and open the Apple Watch app. Then tap on My Watch and then tap on your current Apple Watch on the top of the screen. Tap on Pair New Watch and then get your other Apple Watch in the pairing process. Place the other watch underneath your iPhone and use the camera to align with the viewfinder on the watch face. After holding up the Apple Watch to your iPhone camera, follow the pairing directions on your iPhone screen. When you get to the backup screen during setup, choose whether you want to set up the watch as new or use a backup from your current Apple Watch.
Next, here are some things to know after you pair your second, third and other subsequent Apple Watches to an iPhone. Each Apple Watch paired to your iPhone has its own settings, apps and data independently, which means that every customisation and change you do to the watch does not affect other Apple Watches paired to your iPhone. This includes adding Apple Pay cards, creating watch faces and managing apps. Exceptions to this rule include Activity and Workout data, which means that the data is shared across all Apple Watch models. So if you wear a different Apple Watch that is paired to your iPhone that you paired your other watch too, then the Activity rings, steps, credit and workouts update to the watch you are currently wearing. This takes a minute to update to your other watch to your current watch.
Third, only one Apple Watch can be used at a time, as watchOS does not support wearing multiple Apple Watches or letting another person use your watch. As a result of this misconception about wearing multiple Apple Watches paired to a single iPhone, there is a section in the app that tells which Apple Watch you are currently wearing.
In the app, tap on My Watch then tap on the Apple Watch you’re wearing on the top of the screen. There is a list of all of the Apple Watch models paired to your iPhone, with an orange checkmark on the watch you are currently wearing. To switch to another Apple Watch, put the watch on your wrist and raise it or move your arm. In addition, you can use Auto Switch to let your iPhone automatically choose the watch you want to wear. This includes the app on the iPhone automatically switching watches when you put on a different Apple Watch on your wrist. This can be turned on in the watches list in the My Watch section in the app.
Finally, if you turn off Auto Switch, you need to tell your iPhone which watch you’re going to wear. In the watch list from the My Watch tab in the Apple Watch app, tap on the watch you’d like to wear and the checkmark should be next to the Apple Watch’s picture. The checkmark signifies that the Apple Watch you’re wearing is connected to your iPhone currently. In addition, if the Activity data on your Apple Watch doesn’t update at all, then keep your watch and iPhone close together and connected for a few minutes until the data is updated.
