Apple is currently designing the antenna module used in its new 5G iPhone because it is not satisfied with the version designed by Qualcomm, as per a new report from Fast Company.
According to people familiar with the matter, Apple is "hesitant" about whether to apply the QTM 525 5G millimeter wave antenna module provided by Qualcomm to its 5G iPhone "iPhone 12" because it "is not suitable for the industrial design of Apple's new iPhone "In other words, Qualcomm will still provide 5G modems for the new iPhone models, but the antenna module may be developed by Apple.
Even if Apple ended up using Qualcomm modem and Qualcomm antenna, the price is that iPhones using Qualcomm 5G antennas will be slightly thicker. Apple's new antenna design requires twice as much power to produce the same amount of radio signals as previous antennas, though.
It is plentiful challenging to build a 5G antenna for the mmWave network than other types of antennas because the former must be able to send and receive higher frequency signals, and the performance of 5G also depends on the design of the antenna. According to Fast Company, Apple's 5G iPhone will likely have complications if it uses 5G chips composed of antennas and modem modules made by different companies. The entire 5G chip can work normally only when the modem chip and antenna module closely cooperate and manufacturing these two parts by different companies may bring some uncertainty.
