iPhone 12 Or To Adopt 802.11ay Wi-Fi Standard; Waterproof AirTags Rumored

iPhone 12 To Adopt 802.11ay Wi-Fi Standard

iPhone 12 is expected to adopt a new near-field communication Wi-Fi standard called IEEE 802.11ay, which can connect smart home appliances and other hardware at gigabit speeds, according to the Japanese blog Mac Otakara. Meanwhile, the 802.11ay standard is also nearing completion and a final specification may be released by the end of 2020.

Sources at Mac Otakara revealed that this technology will enable the iPhone 12 to connect at gigabit WI-Fi speeds and connect directly to nearby devices without the need for intermediate network hardware. Such a type of Wi-Fi is based on the WiGig standard and is used for very special purposes, such as replacing a virtual reality headset cable with a high-speed wireless connection that can be considered a single-use wireless cable instead of a traditional Wi-Fi connection.

In 2018, Qualcomm announced the launch of the first two 60GHz Wi-Fi chipsets, QCA64x8 and QCA64x1, which can deliver up to 10+Gbps of network speed and low latency for smartphones, laptops, routers, etc., while also limiting power consumption.

Because WiGig relies on the 802.11ad connection standard, Qualcomm has pushed WiGig to a new generation of wireless standards called 802.11ay.

Waterproof AirTags With Magnetic Wireless Charging Feature

"AirTags," Apple's item tracking device, will be completely waterproof and will use similar magnetic wireless charging methods as Apple Watch, again according to Mac Otakara. In the beta version of iOS 13 released last summer, there were codes referenced that Apple was developing an item tracking device, "AirTags."

Customers can use the "Find My" app to locate AirTags. The Ultra Wideband feature in iPhone 11 is also designed to better support AirTags, but, so far, there is no sign that indicates for when will Apple release "AirTags."
