Kuo: iPhone 12 Would Feature One Or Two 5G PA Chips Rather Than Six

The latest Apple research report published by Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo pointed out that demand for 5G PA chips of Apple's upcoming iPhone 12 models may be lower than expected.


Kuo mentions that the 5G PA chip utilization of each 5G iPhone is down from the previous estimate of six to one or two. In a June 2019 report, Kuo estimated that Apple will add six 5G PA chips to the 5G iPhones launch in the second half of 2020, including two N41, N77 and N79 chips.

The report noted that recent analysis showed that n41 is no longer used due to 4G mid-high frequency PA implementation, and 2x2 Uplink is terminated. Therefore, it is expected that the 2020 iPhones will include just 1 or 2 5G PA chips, namely the n77 and n79, or, n77 and n79 are integrated into one.

PA chips are Power Amplifier, which are a type of radio frequency chip used for signal amplification in communication systems. It converts a low-power radio-frequency signal into a higher power signal.

Typically, power amplifier are in placed to drive the antenna of a transmitter. Its objectives often include gain(increase the power or amplitude of a signal from the input to the output port), power output, bandwidth, power efficiency, linearity (low signal compression at rated output), matching input and output impedance, and heat dissipation.

This could essentially means that iPhone 12 may not boast a faster 5G signal despite it will include Qualcomm's Snapdragon X55 Modem and supports mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum.
