Apple CEO Tim Cook announced on Twitter today the launch of the Racial Equity and Justice Initiative and pledged to invest US$100 million, which will be led by Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy, and social initiatives.
The project will start in the United States and spread over the world over time, addressing systemic barriers to opportunities and dignity in communities of color, especially black communities, with special attention to education, economic equality, and criminal justice reform and other issues.
Beginning in the United States and expanding globally over time, the initiative will challenge the systemic barriers to opportunity and dignity that exist for communities of color and particularly for the black community with special focus on issues of education, economic equality, and criminal justice reform.
Apple said the effort will be based on its cooperation with long-established black universities, community colleges, STEM education, and underserved students and teachers, and will build new partnerships with organizations such as the Equality and Justice Initiative.
Apple also announced the establishment of a new developer entrepreneur camp for black developers before WWDC 2020. In the supply chain, Apple is also committed to increasing spending with black-owned partners and increasing the representation of companies it works with.
Tim Cook said in a tweet that "the unfinished work of racial justice and equality call us all to account." However, to complete the task, he says that Apple has "committed to being a force" of pushing to get it done.
