macOS Will Finally Get Faster Software Update Installation With Big Sur

Apple released macOS Big Sur at WWDC 2020, which has a redesigned interface, a range of new features for Maps and Messages, Control Center tweaks, and more. Big Sur also has some big changes that didn't discuss at WWDC, such as the ability to install software updates faster in the background.

Beforehand, users could not use the Mac during the update installation process. But with macOS Big Sur, it can speed up the installation of software updates by running some processes in the background, resulting in the update speed that is faster than before.

It's possible the installation process may be similar to iOS. In iOS, the system will prepare the update and necessary files before restarting, thus, users will need to wait less time to get hands-on it.

Apple also suggested that macOS Big Sur introduced a cryptographically signed system volume, which can protect the system from tampering and help install updates faster. It also means that your Mac knows the exact layout of your system volume, allowing it to begin software updates in the background while you work.

macOS Big Sur is currently available for download for beta developers, and the first public beta will be released later this month. The update is expected to be pushed to all users this fall.
