Apple Releases New AirPods Pro Firmware With Spatial Audio Support

Apple today issued a new firmware update for the AirPods Pro and the second-generation of AirPods.


The new update should be automatically installed as long as they stay connected to an iPhone or iPad, and in the charging case.

AirPods Pro users can check the firmware version their headphones are running by heading to Settings and tapping on General, About, and AirPods Pro, look at the number next to "Firmware Version."

The new AirPods Pro firmware appears to include support for Spatial Audio, which can be activated in the Control Center. According to Apple, Spatial Audio provides simulated surround experience through the earbuds, using advanced motion tracking and device location technique. Spatial Audio will activate automatically when you watch content with Dolby 5.1 or 7.1 surrounds sound audio tracks.

In addition to Spatial Audio, the firmware also added support Automatic Switching. Essentially, it will connect the ‌AirPods‌ to any Apple device signed with your iCloud account when you activate audio on that device and are actively using it. The feature is available for AirPods‌ and ‌AirPods Pro‌.
