Reputable Above Avalon analyst Neil Cybart shared a report today that shows that the number of people wearing Apple Watch in the world has exceeded 100 million. According to the report, after Apple launched Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, and Apple Fitness + in December 2020, it reached this important milestone.
Apple Watch was originally released in September 2014 but did not go on the market until April 2015. This means that Apple's smartwatches have been on the market for nearly 6 years, which is also the time when the product reached 100 million users.
As the report revealed, the installment of the Apple Watch is increasing significantly every year. Just in 2020, Apple sold Apple Watch to 30 million new users, which surpassed the combined number of Apple Watch users in 2015, 2016, and 2017. The report also pointed out that about 10% of iPhone users already have Apple Watch.
Although the percentage seems small, considering the possibility of future expansion and the number of over 1 billion active iPhones in the world, these are exceptional numbers. The study also shows that Apple Watch is currently Apple's fourth-largest product, second only to iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It is estimated that by 2022, Apple Watch will surpass Mac.
Since the U.S. has been an Apple Watch stronghold for years, adoption in the country has trended materially high in comparison to global figures. At the end of 2020, approximately 35% of iPhone users in the U.S. were wearing an Apple Watch. This is a shockingly strong adoption rate that should serve as a wake-up call to Apple competitors interested in the wearables space. Apple Watch turned Fitbit from a household name as the wearables industry leader into a company that will eventually be viewed as an asterisk when the wearables story is retold to future generations.
One of the reasons for the adoption of the Apple Watch is that people are increasingly looking for wearable devices because these products "make technology more personal."
The paper also stressed that the Apple Watch is popular with users because it has the "Cool Factor" as a new product, and also because it provides unique features such as health monitoring, not to mention integration Apple’s ecosystem allows users to integrate Apple Watch with other Apple products and services
Looking ahead, Neil Cybart predicts that with Apple’s efforts in new features, Apple Watch sales will have greater growth, fueled by iOS 14.5 beta, which adds the ability to unlock iPhone with Apple Watch.
