Apple today announced the third-generation AirPods, which features a new contoured design, spatial audio, extended battery life, a force sensor for easy and intuitive control of music and phone calls, and more.
“AirPods forever changed wireless headphones with their groundbreaking design, incredible sound, and magical experience,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “We are excited to introduce the next generation of AirPods, featuring unrivaled sound through Adaptive EQ and spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, along with seamless interaction between Apple devices — making the world’s best-selling headphones even better.”
The new AirPods are light and fit the contours, and the comfort is just right so that the music can be delivered directly to the ears. In order to create a more sophisticated design, the new AirPods use a shorter headphone handle than the previous generation, using the same force sensor as the AirPods Pro to control media content. The new AirPods and charging case are resistant to sweat and water (IPX4 rating).
AirPods is covered by an acoustic mesh to help reduce the sound of the wind, so the speaker’s voice comes across distinctly on calls. AirPods also feature AAC-ELD, a superior speech codec that offers full HD voice quality, providing clear, natural communication for FaceTime calls.
The new AirPods use computational audio technology, bring the popular features on AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, such as adaptive equalization, spatial audio support for dynamic head tracking, etc., so that more users can experience. Additionally, the new AirPods feature Adaptive EQ that tunes sound in real-time based on how AirPods fit in the user’s ear.
Moreover, there is also a new skin-detect sensor that accurately discerns if AirPods are in the ear — versus in a pocket or on a table — and pauses playback when removed
AirPods (third-generation) provide longer battery life, up to 6 hours of listening time, and up to 4 hours of talk time. It only takes 5 minutes to charge the AirPods to provide about 1 hour of battery life, and the charging case can provide 4 additional charges, allowing users to get a total of up to 30 hours of listening time. AirPods are now part of the MagSafe and support more convenient wireless charging.
AirPods (3rd generation) will be available for $179 and are available to order from apple.com/store and in the Apple Store app in the US and more than 26 other countries and regions starting today, with availability in stores beginning Tuesday, October 26.
