Kuo: iPad And MacBook With Mini-LED Displays Coming Late 2020 & Early 2021

Tian Feng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shared his new research report in which he believes that the Mini-LED display will become the primary choice for future iPads and MacBooks' display. Apple's planning to release the iPad with Mini-LED display as soon as the end of 2020 or early 2021, while the MacBook with Mini-LED display will be unveiled in the first quarter or second quarter of 2021.

Apple's upcoming 32-inch Pro Display XDR already adopts a similar Mini-LED technology.

In order to meet the slender building demands of portable devices, Kuo anticipated that the iPad and MacBook would use approximately 10,000 LEDs (vs. 576 LEDs of Pro Display XDR) and that the LED particle density would be less than 20 μm (considerably lower than the Pro Display XDR).

Additionally, the trusted Apple analyst argues that LG Display will supply the Mini-LED display panels, while Epistar, Zhen Ding, Radiant Opto-Electronics, Nichia, Avary Holding and TSM will provide the parts needed for Mini-LED displays.

As to why Apple would prefer the Mini-LED design to the OLED, Kuo says that the two technologies provide a similar range of colors, while the Mini-LED technology is not as prone to imaging. However, using Mini-LED would suggest that Apple's new hardware would be more costly, given the price of the Pro Display XDR, which starts at a staggering $4,999.
