iPhone 12 Likely To Retain Lightning Port; 2021 iPhones Completely Wireless

According to a reliable leaker, the upcoming "iPhone 12" will retain Apple's Lightning connector instead of switching to the long-rumored USB-C. What's more worth looking forward to is that he added that the next year's flagship iPhone models are expected to ditch all ports and utilize Smart Connector.

Twitter user @choco_bit said that despite some speculation that Apple will adopt USB-C technology this year, the proprietary Lightning port will be at least stay on the iPhone for another year. The statement also confirms the previous opinion of Jon Prosser on the "iPhone 12" interface.

This is not the first time we heard that there would be iPhones with Smart Connector in the pipeline, and the similar rumors surfaced ahead of the release of the iPhone 8. In fact, well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects that Apple’s high-end 2021 iPhone models would offer a “completely wireless experience.”

User @choco_bit has previously shared some iPhone 12 leaks, including images that show an updated rear camera array of the iPhone 12 Pro with iPad Pro-like LiDAR scanner, a smaller TrueDepth camera system, as well as iOS 14 leaks showing Home screen widgets.

The Smart Connector was first introduced alongside the unveiling of the 2015 iPad Pro. It features three pins that provide iPad power and data synchronization to accessories such as the Smart Keyboard. However, the issue with Smart Connector is that it's not waterproof, meaning that Apple would need to do more research to sustain its water-resistance rating.

Anyway, it is feasible that the use of the Smart Connector" will complete the transition to the iPhone full wireless experience and the routine charging and data transmission through induction and wireless, while the "smart connector" offers a way to connect accessories via special adapters and to satisfy the demands of having to restore and recovery devices.
