Apple Watch Series 6 And SE: A Guide Of The Two Models.

This September’s event mainly pertained to the Apple Watch and iPad, which includes 2 different models of every product. This event consisted of the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE, which is a budget model for the Series 6. There are a lot of new colors for the aluminum and stainless steel models of Apple Watch Series 6, plenty of new watch faces for Series 4 and later models, and additional changes and features for the final watchOS 7 updates. Here is the guide of the differences between the two Apple Watch models, including the features of watchOS 7.

Apple Watch Series 6

The Apple Watch Series 6 features an oxygen saturation sensor, new (PRODUCT) RED and blue colors for aluminum models, and a yellower gold stainless steel color. The Apple Watch Series 6 Space Black model is also renamed as Graphite Stainless Steel, which is slightly greyer than a completely black color. The titanium Apple Watch Edition still remains but the ceramic models from Series 5, the first model in the newest generation of Apple Watch design, is no longer available. In the health features, the blood oxygen saturation uses the red lights from the heart rate sensor to measure oxygen levels in the bloodstream, which makes sure that the user is not lacking oxygen-rich blood during the day. Apple has also partnered up with Anthem Blue Cross, UC Irvine, the Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research, and the Pete Munk Cardiac Centre of University Health Network to study how the oxygen saturation monitoring features on Apple Watch Series 6 can help with detecting respiratory diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, and pneumonia.

The Series 6 features an S6 chip that is the same processing power as the A13 Bionic in the iPhone 11 Pro, with 20x faster launch speeds to open apps and retains its 18-hour battery life. There is also a U1 and Ultra-Wideband antennas to allow wearers to pair AirTags, NFC items, digital car keys, and many more NFC accessories to their Apple Watch. Fast charging is now on the Apple Watch Series 6 to charge it fully in under 90 minutes. An ideal feature for those who wear their Apple Watch all day, even when they have to wear it while they are sleeping. The Series 6 starts at $399, for the GPS models and $499 in cellular models.

Apple Watch SE

This is the second budget Apple Watch the Cupertino company has offered since the first Apple Watch in 2015, which includes the Series 1 in 2016 as a slightly revamped 1st-generation Apple Watch. The Apple Watch SE is an aluminum Apple Watch available in the 3 classic colors of gold, space grey, and silver, and case sizes of 40mm and 44mm. Although it can be easily mistaken as a regular aluminum Series 4, 5, or 6, it has all of the Series 4 and 5 features and design but without an always-on Retina display, red lights on the heart rate sensor for oxygen saturation measurements, and the extra red and blue colors. The only difference that sets it apart from the Series 4 models is the elevation and compass. The Apple Watch SE starts at $279 for GPS models and $329 for cellular models. It is a $120-170 difference from the regular price of the Series 6.

watchOS 7 Final Release Changes and Features

This time watchOS 7 is now publicly released as of writing this article, which is a day after the event. It gives users a chance to check out the new watch faces introduced in the event. Most of the watch faces can be used on Series 4 and later models. The new watch faces include Memoji, GMT, Artist, Stripes, Chronograph Pro, Count Up, and Typograph. Users can also add more than one type of complication from third-party apps in a single watch face.

Other than the new watch faces, an iPhone does not need to be in possession for use of an Apple Watch. Users without an iPhone can use a Series 4 and later cellular Apple Watch with Family Setup, as long they have a family member or trusted one who has their own iPhone. This feature is ideal for parents with younger children and the elderly who do not own an iPhone, which allows them to use their Apple Watch with their own data and phone number on it. When Family Setup is used for a child, they can communicate with a limited number of contacts, use Schooltime mode to stay focused with a yellow-dial watch face, know where they are going with Maps and Find My, utilize all of the watchOS 7 features, and stay active with modified Activity rings. The modified versions of the Activity rings include the Move ring’s purpose of the Exercise ring by tracking a minimum of half an hour of brisk movements, which is only available for users with Family Setup and under 13 years of age. Certain health features can not be used or only available depending on the user’s age, such as the oxygen saturation monitoring in Series 6, fall detection, ECG app, and Cycle Tracking. Not all Apple Watch compatible carriers can support Family Setup, which means that users have to check the Apple website prior to setting up their Apple Watches in this mode.

This wraps up for the guide to purchasing a new Apple Watch this year, including the final version of watchOS 7. Both Apple Watch models are available to buy from a local Apple Store, an Apple Authorised Reseller, and the Apple Online Store. watchOS 7 is also available as a software update for Apple Watch Series 3 or later, as long its paired iPhone is running iOS 14 and later.
