Apple's iPhone X Topped Consumer Reports' Best Smartphone Camera Rankings, Followed By iPhone 8

Following a report that the Google Home Max and Sonos One sound better than HomePod, Consumer Reports just published their best smartphone camera rankings, and surprisingly, the magazine calls iPhone X as the top smartphone with the best quality.

Apple's iPhones took up most of the spots on Consumer Reports' list of top 10 smartphone cameras, with the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus following the iPhone X. With Samsung's phones including Galaxy S8, S8 Active, S8+, and Note 8 did well. Meanwhile, the iPhone 7, 7 Plus, and 6 Plus also earned top 10 spots.


In 10 of the phones the media tested, all did well in its still-image quality tests, which are designed to “evaluate resolution, dynamic range, color accuracy, and visual noise.” And in the video part, the iPhone X and iPhone 8 to be “excellent” for video quality, but iPhone 8 Plus for some reasons only received "very good."

Photography sites DxO and DPReview both gave the iPhone X's camera a satisfaction result, in which DxO gives a score of 97, that's higher than any other iPhone, while DPReview says it is capable of "extremely impressive" results. 

Apple had always focused on its camera technology, for instance, the company introduced dual rear lens in vertical orientation for iPhone X with optical image stabilization for both the telephoto and the wide-angle lenses that are first to be used in an iPhone. The device adopted Apple's own front-facing TrueDepth camera system that enables neat features like a selfie Portrait Mode and Face ID.
