iOS and iPadOS 13 is coming in 4 days. We are so excited for Thursday and we are now finally getting iOS 13 to everyone’s iPhones and iPads. But, we have to do a few more things before we install the update Thursday, which includes backing up your iPhone, memorizing your Apple ID credentials and more. Let’s prepare our iPhones and iPads for the iOS 13 release this Thursday.

First, it is best to backup your iPhone to iCloud or iTunes before installing the update, because if anything happens, you can revert your iPhone back to its last state. To do an iCloud backup, head over to the Settings app, tap on your profile picture with your name on it, tap on iCloud, then scroll down and tap on iCloud Backup. Your iPhone or iPad will back up automatically every time it’s connected to WiFi and charging. If you want to back up your iPhone right now, then tap Back Up Now. This should take 15-45 minutes to complete.

If you don’t have as much iCloud storage, then you have to back up your iPhone via iTunes. You’ll need your MacBook with iTunes installed, a Lightning cable or a USB-C cable and 30 minutes to an hour of your time. First, get your iPhone out and connect it to your MacBook or computer. Then power up your computer and open iTunes. If iTunes prompts you to enter your iPhone passcode or trust the device, then enter in the passcode and allow the iPhone for syncing to your computer. Click on the iPhone or iPad icon on the top bar in the iTunes app, which is on the top left-hand side below the audio control buttons. If you want your backups to be secure, then encrypt your backups with a password that you only know. Sit back and do other things on your MacBook as your iPhone backs up for several minutes. Once it’s done, you can unplug your iPhone from the computer. You can also check the times your iPhone or iPad was last backed up in the device summary screen.

Next, in all cases, every iPhone and iPad user needs to memorize their Apple ID login credentials and their iPhone and iPad passcodes when doing iOS updates. All major iOS updates, including iOS 13, will have a setup assistant that comes up after you update your iPhone. Apple has placed this in iOS updates such as iOS 13, 12.2 and other major updates so they can make sure your iOS devices are ready to go and are set up completely. These setup assistants include logging on your iPhone with your passcode, Apple ID suggestions and setting up new features. On the other hand, if you do not remember your passcode and Apple ID login information for your iPhone and iPad, you can get stuck in the update process!

Last, go to Apple’s support webpage to make sure your iPhone or your iPad is compatible with iPadOS and iOS 13. This includes all iPhones 6s and later and iPads that are released in 2015 or later, except for the iPad Air 2. Only one iPad model released in 2014 is compatible with iPadOS 13, so if you still have ahold of the iPad Air 2, you’re lucky to get the latest version.

iOS 13 is an awesome update that we are looking forward to this Thursday. The update consists of video editing, Dark Mode, Haptic Touch, Audio Sharing and Memoji Stickers. After you’re done with preparing your iOS devices for the iOS 13 update this Thursday, you are good to go for the update. Now go to Settings, General and then to Software Update to update your iPhone to iOS 13!
