Kuo: 2022 iPhone To Feature Periscope Telephoto Lens For Better Optical Zoom

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a report claiming that the 2022 iPhone to use a special periscope telephoto lens, which can provide better optical zoom performance than the current iPhone.

Kuo says that Semco, the best lens supplier in South Korea and Sunny Optical, the best lens supplier in China, will enter the Apple lens supply chain in the second half of 2020 and 2021, respectively. The analyst expects that Semco will supply a large part of the new periscope telephoto lens for Apple's 2022 iPhone.

Today, smartphones outfitted with periscope camera modules include Huawei P30 Pro and Samsung's Galaxy S20 Ultra. The former provides a 5x optical zoom.

Digital zoom can hover further than optical zoom, however, in terms of image quality, digital zoom is obviously inferior to optical zoom, as digital zoom utilizes software to zoom in on certain parts of the image, just like zooming in with photo editing software.

As early as 2016, Apple had applied for a patent related to the periscope lens. Called "folded telephoto camera lens system," the patent describes how the light will be guided into the camera through the main lens, bounce off the mirror held in the smartphone, and then sent to a secondary lens that moves up and down for the purpose of magnification.

Ming-Chi Kuo also revealed that iPhone 12 will use Semco's ball-type voice coil motor mechanism to improve the upcoming flagship smartphones' autofocus feature.
