Apple Rumored To Launch 6.1-Inch LCD iPhone With Metal Backing, Might Not Support Wireless Charging

According to a Nikkei report, Apple will release three iPhone models in 2018, including two OLED models, and a LCD model. Sources said the 2018 LCD iPhone that could feature a metal back like the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus.

The Japanese blog says the LCD model will feature a 6.1-inch display, while the two OLED models will measure in at 5.8 inches and either 6.2 or 6.3 inches. The LCD model with a metal back will be "come in several colors," much like existing aluminum iPhones.

“The 6.1-inch LCD model will likely sport a metal back [like older iPhone handsets] that will come in several colors,” said the source, adding that the two OLED handsets will come in two sizes: one either 6.2 or 6.3 inches long, and the other 5.8 inches.

Next year’s LCD iPhone is expected to be the more affordable option, with Apple also introducing a new OLED model at around 6.5-inches. It’s believed that it’s harder for Apple to produce additional color options in the glass back design of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

A 6.1-inch LCD model with a metal body presumably made of aluminum would not be able to work with wireless charging, that explains why iPhone 8 uses glass design, so it can get wireless charging feature. It is not clear if Apple is willing to take a step back and remove  this new key feature from future iPhones.
