Ahead Of iOS 11 Public Release, Google Today Officially Unveils Android 8.0 Oreo, What's New?

Google today officially announced the next-generation of its Android operating system, Android 8.0 Oreo. It includes dozens of new features, such as notification improvements, picture-in-picture support, a much like iOS's 3D Touch feature. Android O is coming soon to the Pixel, Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P.

The update Introduces 'Notification Dots', a feature similar to app badges on iOS, make it easier to see which apps have new content to display. When you long tap on an app icon will display information like the last notification received and app widgets, much like a 3D Touch on iOS. Icons can now change their appearance and shape to reflects Home screen theme.

Picture-in-picture support allows users to watch Youtube while using other apps, while a new autofill feature remembers login information to allow for quicker username and password entry. Instant Apps that allows developers to create apps that can run instantly, are now enabled by default.


Other changes for Android Oreo are: support the new Unicode 10 emoji characters, Historic chats can now appear in messaging notifications, like iOS's iMessage alerts. Android O further improves battery life that prevents apps from draining the battery while they’re in the background.

According to Google, The launch times of Android Oreo is twice as fast as the current version of Android, as they said having made "extensive changes" to the Android runtime to optimize it, as well as introduced security improvements, for example, Google Play Protect is a new service for automatically keeping apps safe by regularly scanning them for issues.
