Apple Expected To Ship 88 Million iPhone Units In The Quarter, The Greatest Number Of iPhones Ever Shipped In A Quarter

Analytics firm IHS Markit gave surprising expectations, saying Apple's iPhone shipments this quarter is expected to reach 88.8 million. If is true, this will be the greatest number of iPhones ever shipped in one quarter. The company says that the iPhone X hit 2% of the active installed iPhone base within three weeks of its first availability.

Countries with high adoption rates of iPhone X are countries with high GDP per capita, like Singapore, Denmark, Switzerland, and Japan. In the US, iPhone X's availability has beaten the iPhone 8 Plus after three weeks of availability, surpassing the iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 Plus adoption levels. But didn't catch up with the initial performance of iPhone7.

In the US, iPhone X adoption after three weeks matched the adoption of iPhone 8 Plus and beat early adoption levels for both the iPhone 8 and 7 Plus. Only the iPhone 7 model had greater initial success. In Japan, initial iPhone X adoption was as good as or better than any recent iPhone launch, and matched the level of the iPhone 7.

Apple will only need to ship just 31 million iPhone X units in order for iPhone average selling price (ASP) to exceed US$700 for the first time in the iPhone’s 10-year history. The significantly higher price of the iPhone X puts Apple on track for another all-time record, in average selling price.

Despite the initial concerns that limiting supply due to technical issues may affect sales, these concerns turned out to be superfluous. Because Apple was able to rapidly ramping up production, shipping quickly falling from 5-6 weeks early on through 1-2 weeks and then one week.
