On your Mac, Dock gives you a handy way of launching applications that you use the most frequently with a single click. So what if you want to dividing your apps up by category? Fortunately, You can add blank spacers to the Mac OS X Dock by issuing a defaults write command in the Terminal. And here is how!

1. Go to Spotlight Search and then type Terminal
2. Click on Terminal when the search result pops up.
3. After enter the following command then press return:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{"tile-type"="spacer-tile";}'; killall Dock

That'll create a single space in your Dock. Click and drag that space wherever you'd like it to go, just as if it were a standard app icon. It is important to noted here that If you want additional spaces, just to repeat the same command in Terminal. which means each time you do, another space will be created.

Want to change it back? Just simply drag the blank icons off the dock until the “remove” bubble shows up—it’s just like removing any other app! The thing is you don't want miss out this feaure since Spaces break up the apps by function will definitely makes it easier for user to locate them at a glance.
