The Korea Herald, LG Display will begin supplying OLED panels to Apple's new range of iPhones this year. It states that Samsung will remain the sole supplier of the OLED panels for the smaller model, while LG will supply the panels for the 6.5-inch model.
LG is already a supplier of LCD panels, which is currently used in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but Samsung dominates the supply of OLED displays for Apple's flagship iPhone X. Indeed, last week LG revealed in a
regulatory filing that it didn't supply any of the OLED panels currently used in the iPhone X.
Apple plans to diversify OLED models this year. Sources said LG Display is likely to produce larger 6.5-inch screens, while Samsung Display will focus more on producing smaller 5.8- or 6-inch screens.
The first shipments will not be large, totaling about 15-16 million screens for the year. Samsung Display, the sole OLED supplier for the current iPhone X, produces more than 10 million screens per month.
However, Reports have been trickling out that in the summer of 2017 Apple was paying LG $2.7B for OLED production lines exclusively dedicated to iPhone screens. LG last month hinted that it was close to signing a deal for these. LG is also said to be planning to mass-produce the panels for Apple at its Gen 6 flexible OLED production line located in Paju, South Korea.
Apple will likely launch the new iPhone X and X Plus around the usual timeframe of September to October, potentially alongside a new 6.1-inch mid-range model with an LCD display. As for iPhone SE, we expected the device to launch in the first half of this year.
