According to the DigiTimes report, Pegatron has secured orders from Apple that will be producing an ARM-based MacBook. In addition, the Taiwan-based website confirmed previous Bloomberg report that the new ARM MacBook has an internal codename of Star and carries the serial number of N84.

Pegatron is likely to land orders from Apple to produce an ARM-based MacBook model, codenamed Star with a series number N84, according to industry sources.

Rumors about Apple's eventual launch of the ARM-based MacBook have been around for a long time, just over this weekend, 9to5Mac has reported that Apple’s so-called "Star" project could be the device. A report from September also claimed that Apple would build its own ARM chips for its laptops.

The primary reason behind this approach is that the development of ARM chips will allow Apple to reduce its dependence on Intel. The ARM processor consumes less power and has fewer transistors, implementing the IC with a smaller size.

iPhone X, Apple's first iPhone with an OLED screen, which also marks Apple's shift from LCD to OLED technology. Indeed, multiple reports suggested that Apple will release three iPhones this year, two of them are using OLED screen. And now, a new report says that Apple will complete its transition to OLED in 2019...

The report from Korean ET News stated that Apple plans to adopt OLED technology on all three new iPhones next year. Affected by this rumor, JDI's stock fell 20%, because this company mainly provides LCD screens for Apple.

"Apple recently started planning the iPhone model in 2019 and decided to adopt OLED in all three types," said an official from Apple who said, "The OLED used in the iPhone X (TEN) is a low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) LCD Quality, performance, and so on. "

Apple is still developing a new hinge design for its laptop products such as the MacBook. Since 2013, Apple has been researching and optimizing the hinge design. And now, the European Patent Office announced a new Apple patent that further explains the new flexible hinge design.

Referred to as "Living Hinge," the design allows the entire MacBook's enclosure to be made from one rigid of material. It sounds similar to the Surface Book's hinge introduced by Microsoft in 2015, which is called "dynamic fulcrum hinge," where you can reverse the notebook into a tablet, you can remove the screen from the hinge as well.

An enclosure for a laptop may be created from a rigid material having a flexible portion defined around approximately a midpoint of the material. The flexible portion may allow the rigid material to be folded in half and thus acts as a laptop clamshell. A top portion may support a display screen and a bottom portion may support a keyboard, track pad, and the like, while an interior defined by sidewalls of the rigid material may house a variety of electronic components in accordance with conventional laptop computing devices.

Not doubt that in addition to increases flexibility, the new hinge design should make the production process easier than ever, as the entire housing can be made from one piece of material. (Via Patently Apple)

Apple's next year iPhones would use post-imposed 3D sensing modules to enables Augmented Reality features. Among them, time-of-flight (ToF) is the main sensing technology. However, according to Deutsche Securities latest report, they believe that Apple will replace ToF technology with the triple-lens rear camera...

Jialin Lu, Deutsche Securities's technology industry analyst said even though market predicts that the iPhone will use the so-called ToF method, but after his visit in Taiwan supply chains, he concluded that Apple will use triple-lens rear camera system instead, which includes two camera lenses that use stereoscopic vision technology and a Tele lens to enhance Zoom.

In January of this year, Apple has announced that data stored in iCloud accounts in China will be moved from US servers to servers in China, and Chinese servers will be fully represented by local companies in Guizhou. The relocation work begins on February 28.

As of now, all the migrations have been completed. Today, we also learned that the Apple has hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the first China data center on Friday, which will be located in Gui'an New Area, Guizhou Province.

It’s expected that the center to offer iCloud services on the mainland China by 2020. The under constructing building will be jointly built by Apple and Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD), and it's said to cover about 67 hectares in Guian New Area.

Isabel Ge Mahe, Apple's vice president and managing director for Greater China spoke about the project during China International Big Data Industry Expo 2018 in Guizhou that data stored in iCloud will reduce delays, improve stability, and enhance the iCloud user experience.

According to The Information, Apple will open full access to iPhone's NFC chip for third-party developers in iOS 12. It can not only used for mobile payments, but also be allowing users to securely unlock doors.

Apple started this work by adding the Core NFC framework on iOS 11 but with limited functionality. The intention of Apple is to allow third-party developers to store sensitive information through the iPhone's built-in Secure Enclave instead of Bluetooth, which can significantly increase popularity.

The change to the near-field communication, or NFC, chip, which is expected to be announced next month, could pave the way for people to use iPhones for other security-sensitive interactions, from paying transit fares and opening car doors to verifying their identity in other ways.

The report also mentioned that Apple has expanded the feature in the Apple Park campus security system developed in cooperation with HID Global, in which Apple employees already use the iPhone to access Apple Park's offices.

Indeed, WWDC 2018 about to kick off on June 4th. As for what changes will be introduced to iOS 12, let's wait and see!

According to a 9to5mac report, Apple is currently developing a brand-new device with the codename "Star" and the model number of N84. This will be the first Mac with an ARM processor, or the first iOS notebook.

Macs have been using Intel’s processors since 2006. However, Apple’s mobile devices have been using Apple’s own custom chips since 2010. But then the recent news did report that Apple plans to use its custom chips for the Mac in 2020.

For months, the site has been tracking the "Star" project. Currently, the project is in the prototype design stage, and product prototypes have been handed over to OEMs. A small number of prototypes have been sent to the Apple headquarters for testing, and the prototype has been in production since January of this year.

The report suggests that this will be a device with a touchscreen, SIM card slot, supports GPS, compass, waterproof, and EFI interface. EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface) is used by the Mac to boot systems. It’s believed that the "Star" project may become the first ARM-based Mac product.

This new device is currently classified as a new product lineup that will run the iOS operating system. The device can be used to distinguish between different iOS devices. Since ARM processors already support LTE and GPS, which means that the hybrid device may differ significantly from existing Intel-based Macs.

Apple brought a newly designed App Store to iOS 11 on WWDC last year, it provided the “Today” tap, which includes App Store staff recommended games and apps. This redesign has played a positive role in the app discovery, the downloads of many games and apps have increased significantly.

Now, according to the latest leak from John Gruber, Apple may plan to redesign the Mac App Store in macOS 10.14 and embrace the iOS 11 App Store style. He declared the new iOS11 App Store is very successful, Apple is likely to copy this routine in macOS.

Since its launch in 2011, the Mac App Store hasn't been valued by Apple and its developer community, and some developers have completely abandoned the Mac App Store platform. Sure, the problem in the Mac App Store is not that the app discovery is difficult, but rather the lack of features and user interest, could the redesign get the users' attention again?

A new Apple patent application shows that Siri one day could provide iPhone callers with reasons to why you had to reject the call. It could become a more enjoyable and useful experience for important callers or family members, to suggest why individuals cannot answer the phone.

Named “Intelligent Digital Assistant Denied Calls”, the patent application issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday pointed out that the current call interface is limited and can only provide basic options for answering or rejecting incoming calls.

So the solution is to let Apple's voice assistant collect information about the user and then automatically relay the details to the caller. For instance, Siri can alert the caller about the user's current location, whether the iPhone is in Do Not Disturb modes, tell the caller that user is at gym, or the user enjoying a movie as if he/she activated Theater Mode.

Combining all this data together, the digital assistant can create a message using that information. The generated message can be provided to the user to check that it is fine to send before it is dispatched to the caller. Moreover, the system could be used with CarPlay just in case you can't answer calls while driving.

Next up, we asked same question again, this time, Siri claims that it will getting "a lot" smarter, which suggesting it will most likely gain new capabilities. The virtual assistant do need to take a big step to improve its functions, several tests shows that it lags behind Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa when it comes to answering queries.

Finally, Siri leaks that a brand new voice will be added to itself, but, wasn't Apple already introduced a more modern voice last year? Siri has also told us that "so many good things" to be announced during WWDC.

Fortune has rolled out its latest Fortune 500 Companies list, and it appears that Apple has fallen one place in the rankings, where it retained its #3 slot last year. However, the tech-giant continue to be the most valuable and profitable company on the list though.

Apple took a small step back, from No. 3 to No. 4, despite a 6% gain in annual sales, but it led the way in profits with more than $48 billion in net income. In short, the Apple juggernaut continues at tremendous scale and despite the overall saturation of smartphones, which make up the vast majority of the company’s sales and profits. In an unusual move, Apple introduced three new phones, the upgraded iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, as well as the redesigned iPhone X (pronounced “ten”), powered by facial-recognition technology. Services likes Apple Pay and Apple Music continued to rise too.

In the rankings, Apple ranked the lowest in 2002, with #325 at the time. It entered the top 100 for the first time in 2009 and surpassed the top 10 in 2013, and it has been a leader on the list since then. As of now, the Cupertino firm now holds $851B market value, it's expected that Apple could be the first trillion-dollar company in the upcoming months.

Other technology companies on the list include Amazon made to the top 10 with #8 slot, right after the largest online retailer is the AT&T which ranked #9, Verizon at #16, Alphabet at #22, and Microsoft at #30.

Apple’s iPhone X remained the best-selling smartphone in March and dominated the entire quarter as the world’s best-selling smartphone. The performance of the iPhone 8 Plus in March has improved to become the second best-selling model follows the iPhone X, as noted by Counterpoint Research.

Furthermore, the report states that iPhone X took a 3.5 percent share of the market - well ahead of all its Android rivals, whereas iPhone 8 with a 2.3 percent share. All these data, which again cancel any concern that Apple's flagship was a flop, after all, iPhone X was a hit to the market.

On the other hand, Chinese vendor Xiaomi's Redmi 5A became the best-selling Android phone in March and ranked third in the world's best-selling smartphone brands. Followed by Oppo's A83. Samsung's latest flagship, S9 and S9 Plus are ranked 5 and 6 respectively.

What is your thought?

Sure, some people says the Phone app is the one the app that didn't receive any new features in the past few years, besides from 3D Touch that let you quick dial favorite contacts on the Home screen. Having said that, there's a petty cool function that you won't even be noticed that is there, and with the tips you don't have to routinely enter the last number, here is how!
  1. Open the Phone app on your Home screen
  2. Tap on the Keypad icon at the bottom of the app
  3. Click the Green button once
  4. Now you last dialed number should show in the top, click the call again
  5. And that's it!

You can use Siri or Voice Control by saying “Redial that last number” as well. However, it's worth to note that the trick actually only allows you to quickly redial last number that was physically dialled using the Keypad, rather than a contact that was being called through the Contacts app.

According to Taiwan’s supply chain source (Via Sina), Apple is in talk with MediaTek to launch a cheap version of its HomePod speakers to grab more market share. Statistics show that HomePod sold only 600,000 units in the first quarter of this year, which is a lot worse than Google and Amazon.

The anonymous source claimed that Apple is preparing to announce the cheap version of HomePod. However, it will not be linked to Apple's name. Instead, it will be under the Beats brand. As for price, the low-priced model would cost around $199, which is far cheaper than current HomePod's cost.

The reason behind Google and Amazon smart speakers' well-received sales, in addition to relatively decent technology, but more importantly, these products cost-effective, such as entry-level models Echo Dot, Home Mini are priced for $49, on the contrary, HomePod price up to $349, it is indeed difficult to accept it, so why not make it cheaper?

Would you purchase a HomePod that's priced for only $199?

Even though the new App Store design has shown sign of greatly improved app downloads, still, a group of more than 130 App Store developers called themselves as Developer Union, today sent an open letter to Apple asking the company to launch free trials for apps and a more reasonable cut of revenues, reports Wired

Its main goal is to ask Apple to implement free trial for iOS and Mac apps by July of this year. The Developers Alliance stated app creators who make great software should be able to rely on these apps to live a normal life. Indeed, the free trial feature allows users to better experience the App and facilitate the final purchase.

We believe that people who create great software should be able to make a living doing it. So we created The Developers Union to advocate for sustainability in the App Store.

Today, we are asking Apple to commit to allowing free trials for all apps in the App Stores by the tenth anniversary of the App Store this July. After that, we'll start advocating for a more reasonable revenue cut and other community-driven, developer-friendly changes.

The Developers Union said that it plans to acquire 20,000 members by early June. Developers have been wanting free trials for Mac and iOS App Store for many years, but Apple has not yet launched. The developer alliance hopes to persuade Apple to provide free trial features to all applications, not just those that provide subscription-based.

Apple's latest high-end flagship smartphone, iPhone X, featured with 3D face recognition technology called Face ID, since it has been available on the market for six months, and the security and ease of use of it, some says that Apple should ditch the Touch ID completely. However, Apple itself does not seem to think so...

According to a report by Korean media Chosun, Apple is developing in-screen fingerprint reader that sets apart from other companies' sensor. Samsung, Apple, and Qualcomm are researching the "ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor", which is different from Chinese vendors Vivo, Huawei's optical in-screen fingerprint scanner.

To simply put, optical sensor reflected light to read the shape of a fingerprint and match it to the user's fingerprint to complete the recognition; ultrasonic, however, when the waves are emitted, so it catches small details of the skin. Therefore, in terms of security, because the ultrasonic scheme is three-dimensional, the security is higher, compared to the optical's flat surface.

Furthermore, when a user has oil stains and water stains on his hands, ultrasonic solutions can be properly identified, whereas the optical solutions would fail to work. So, in general, companies like Apple and Samsung are more willing to adopt a solution with high security and ease of use, even if it is more challenging.

Apparently, Apple's HomePod speaker sales weren't so bad after all, as Strategy Analytics suggest that the company has sold an estimated 600,000 units during the first quarter of 2018. The figure allowed it to capture just 6 percent of the global smart speaker market, ranked in 4th place.

According to the chart, Amazon shipped approximately 4 million Echo smart speakers this quarter, with a market share of 43.6%. Meanwhile, Google shipped around 2.4 million Google Home speaker with a market share of 26.5%. Chinese company Alibaba also leads Apple with 700,000 shipments.

However, it should be pointed out that HomePod was only released on February 9th, and it's only available for purchase three countries, so the data can not fully reflect the specific circumstances in Q1  2018. Plus, it does not break down the average sales price.

Since the HomePod's price is much higher than its competitors' products, it's believed that Apple is developing a cheap version of HomePod, which expected that it will come later this year. In addition, Apple is also accelerating the pace of expansion - Japan and Germany would also join the list of available countries as soon as possible.

Only three days after it released the fifth beta of iOS 11.4, Apple has just issued the sixth beta of the update, indicating that iOS 11.4 could launch rather sooner than later. Developers are able to download these betas in the Apple Developers Center and receive the profiles in order to update your devices.

The forthcoming software update includes several new features such as a new ClassKit framework for education, HomePod calendar support, (Product)RED wallpaper for iPhone 8 and 8 Plus users, and USB Restricted Mode for better security that could prevent tools like GreyKey from unlocking devices.

On the WWDC last year, Apple unveiled much-needed AirPlay 2 and Messages on iCloud, but it's already in mid-May, yet the company still hasn't rolled these features to users. And now since there are present in the update, let's hope it can ultimately reach to customers.

The update is likely to release in the next few weeks.

Samsung has released a new ad encouraging iPhone users to upgrade to the Galaxy S9, in this ad, the Korean smartphone maker poke fun at the performance throttling issue, and continue to mock iPhone X's notch design.

Called "Moving On", the ad campaign shows a woman holds an iPhone 6, and he tries to check her tickets at an AirPort and watch a move on her phone, but instead, the white screen appears on iPhone 6, which suggest the device is lagging badly. The person next to her was able to doing these actions smoothly.

After increasingly frustrated at her iPhone, the woman asked an Apple Store staff if her slow iPhone can be fixed, but the employee advises her that she can turn off Apple's performance management, at the risk of unexpected shutdowns. Surely it make the woman feel helpless, so she decided to switching to Samsung Galaxy S9.

I personally think this is stupidest ad ever made by Samsung, they should be ashamed to compare a 4 year-old iPhone 6 to its latest flagship device. On top of that, the one-minute clip has also a lot of hole on it, even the iPhone model was being throttled; it shouldn't be that slow.

From the design viewpoint, it featured iPhone X-liked notch design that OnePlus says it's a frustrating move, because its own technology is still unable to achieve a true full screen, and OnePlus wants to give consumers as much space as possible. However, OnePlus 6 continues to include a headphone jack, so Carl Pei, OnePlus co-founder making a joke at Apple's expense for removing headphone jack.

New renders made by ChargeLab claims to show the upcoming 18-watt USB-C power adapters for 2018 iPhone models, which included a 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus, a second-generation of iPhone X, and a low-priced LCD model.

According to ChargeLab, the round-shape power adapter would connect to an iPhone with a Lightning to USB-C cable, and expected to be included in the box. Even though the render appears to depict the European version, asides from different pin ends, surely US variant would look mostly the same.

It is expected to make it more convenient and convenient. Compared to the USB-A port that Apple has been using since 2007, the use of USB-C should deliver much faster charging speeds. Several testings found that by using the 18W wired charger, the device has reached 79% of battery capacity in one hour, while 5W charger only passed 39% of charge.

ChargerLab says these renders based on a source that has the close connection to "inside production line," plus that it also corroborates the previous Weibo report, so it seems pretty trustworthy. Likewise, we assumed that the charger won't be included in the box of iPhone SE 2 because of its low price.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the number of Apple Music users has passed 50 million. However, This figure includes paid subscribers and users in free trials, Cook revealed this exciting news in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

Pangu Research Lab has discovered a common type of security exploit during iOS app security audits targeting different customers. After creating the exploit signature, they conducted traceability analysis and similar exploit index on the Janus platform and found that about 10% of iOS apps may be affected by the security flaw.

While auditing iOS Apps from various customers, Pangu Lab noticed a common programming error, which leads to severe consequences such as data overwritten and even code execution in the context of affected Apps. We created a signature for the issue and performed a large-scale search on our App analysis platform Janus. Surprisingly, we found thata round 10% iOS Apps might be affected by the same or similar issue

Once a user downloaded and use these apps in an insecure WiFi environment; an attacker would able to arbitrary code execution in the app. After manual analysis, the research lab confirmed that apps like Weibo, Facebook Moments, Google for iOS, Google Translate, and so on are affected!

The so-called ZipperDown exploit is somewhat related to the affected app features and permissions. In some apps, attackers can only use it to corrupt or overwrite the app's data; however, in some apps, an attacker may able to acquire arbitrary code execution capability in the context of the app. Furthermore, the iOS system's sandbox will also limit the scope of the security flaw.

As of now, Pangu told us that they have tested 168,951 apps, and about 10% of the apps are vulnerable to it. The team also found a similar exploit on the Android platform and have confirmed it has already found on a large number of Android apps! Hopefully, Apple will soon issue a software update to fix the security flaw.

Rosenblatt Securities' analyst Jun Zhang worte that Apple likely to launch multiple colors for the LCD iPhone mode this year, with the options of blue, yellow, and pink not only seeks to target the "younger consumer market,"  but also differentiate the designs of the LCD model from the two high-end OLED models

"Since Apple start to launch three new models every year, we believe the company needs to differentiate the designs of the LCD model from the two high end OLED models," he comments. "One reasonable choice would be to add different colors.
