In 2016, Apple released the first MacBook Pro with Touch Bar. At the time, iFixit's teardown experts found that the machine used a non-replaceable solid state drive. The Touch Bar models' solid-state drive is soldered directly to the logic board. This makes people worry that if the logic board crashes, the data will not be recovered. Fortunately, it's not the case.

For the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros with Touch Bar, Apple offers special tools. Genius staff and Apple Authorized Service Providers can use it to recover data even if the logic board crashes. Of course, the SSD must be in stable condition. The tool is a small black box that can transfer data from a MacBook Pro's crashed logic board to a normal MacBook Pro.

However, last week, iFixit teardown the 2018 MacBook Pro and found that Apple removed the Data recover connector on the logic board, which means the data recovery tool does not support the latest MacBook Pro. A reason for the removal is probably because of the Apple T2 chip, which provides SSD hard drive encryption.

Apple's internal 2018 MacBook ProService Readiness Guide also mentions that advised technicians recommend users to use Time Machine backups. Of course, we can also choose a third-party data recovery tools, but the price is more expensive. Still, at least the critical information is backed up!
