Apple, Amazon, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance announced today that they will set up a new working group that plans to develop and promote new, royalty-free connectivity standard to increase compatibility among smart home products, with security as a fundamental design tenet.
The Zigbee Alliance include companies like IKEA, Legrand, NXP Semiconductors, Resideo, Samsung SmartThings, Schneider Electric, Signify (Philips Lighting), Silicon Labs, Somfy and Wulian.
The goal of the "Connected Home over IP" project is to make it easier for device manufacturers to build devices that are compatible with smart home and voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, Google Assistant, etc. It is built around a shared belief that smart home devices should be secure, reliable, and seamless to use.
Further, the working group will pursue an open-source approach to the development and implementation of a new, standardized connectivity protocol. The project expects to make use of contributions from market-tested smart home solutions from Amazon, Apple, Google, the Zigbee Alliance and others. The decision to incorporate these technologies is expected to accelerate the development of the protocol and to deliver rapid benefits to manufacturers and consumers.
The proposed protocol would complement existing technologies and members of the working group will encourage device manufacturers to continue to innovate using the technologies available to date.
