Analyst: Only sub-6GHz Compliant 5G iPhones Will Be Available This Year

Reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently said in a research paper that he expects the 2020 iPhones will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G technology. However, According to a report published today by Susquehanna analysts, Apple might only launch sub-6GHz compliant 5G iPhones this year and mmWave versions may not be manufactured in small quantities until 2021.

In general, mmWave has higher speeds that may exceed 1Gbps. However, its coverage is much smaller, which means that wireless carriers ought to build a large number of cellular towers.

Analysts at Susquehanna predicts that Apple will sell about 60 million 5G iPhones in the second half of 2020, and will potentially ship 8 million millimeter-wave compatible iPhones by January. And Apple has decided to design its own packaged antenna module instead of using an existing antenna module on the market, this therefore will be causing delays.

Apple is expected to launch four 5G iPhone models this year, and all four iPhones will use 5.4-inch to 6.7-inch OLED displays. Susquehanna reports today that they believe that one of the 5G iPhones with the sub-6 GHz 5G tech this year will retain the LCD display, in line with Kuo's prediction.
