Apple Acquires Popular Weather App Dark Sky, To Drop Android Support

Apple today acquired Dark Sky, the popular paid weather app that's available on iOS and Android devices, according to the team behind it:

Today we have some important and exciting news to share: Dark Sky has joined Apple.

Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy.

There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone.

Dark Sky has been the number one paid weather app on the App Store, it claims itself as the most accurate source of hyperlocal weather information. While the app sells for $3.99 as of writing, it's  possible that Apple will make it free for users, after all, Apple may build it into the stock Weather application with the launch of iOS 14 this fall.

Since Apple has purchased Dark Sky, the app will no longer be available for download on Android and WearOS devices, same as their website's weather forecasts, maps, and embeds. Though service to existing users and subscribers will continue until July 1, 2020, once pass the period, the app will be shut down. Subscribers who are still active at that time will receive a refund.

Lastly, the API service Dark Sky offers for current customers is not changing today, but they will no longer allow new signups. The API will continue to run till the end of 2021.
