iOS 14 Code Hints iPhone 12 Pro To Feature ToF Sensor For New AR Capabilities

9to5Mac reports that they have confirmed that Apple is developing a new iPad Pro with a ToF sensor. Now, the blog have found evidence in the iOS 14 code and found that the iPhone 12's rear camera has the same ToF sensor.


The iOS 14 code seen by 9to5Mac contains information about the new iPhone codenamed "d5x", which may be the new 2020 iPhone, as the iPhone 11 is codenamed "d4x". Only two of these new models have ToF sensors and speculated that they should be iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 Pro's camera may include a ToF 3D sensor, a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a telephoto lens. The ToF sensor will enable the new iPhones to have new augmented reality capabilities. MacRumors reported that Apple is developing a new augmented reality app for iOS 14, which will allow users to get more information about the world around them through AR.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said as early as 2019 that the two new iPhones launched in 2020 will be equipped with ToF sensors in the rear cameras.

Additionally, 9to5Mac also uncovered that the new iPhone 9 will comes with a single rear camera that supports stereo video recording, which has been available in the iPhone XS since 2018.
