Worldwide PC Shipment Drops, And Mac Is No Exception

According to Gartner's latest evaluation of PC shipments, Apple's Mac shipments in the fourth quarter of 2018 fell 3.8% year-on-year, with a total of 4.9 million Macs shipped, compared to 5.1 million of a year ago. However, the market share of the Mac has grown, from 7.1% in the third quarter to 7.2%.

In terms of rankings, Apple still stands fourth, behind Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Apple's Mac sales were affected by the overall decline in the global PC market. Global PC shipments in the fourth quarter fell 4.3% from the previous year, of 71.7 million to 68.6 million. The report further estimates that Apple's sales of Mac in 2018 too declined, from 19 million in 2018 to 18 million, a drop of about 5%.

Sales of Asus, HP, Acer were also unsightly, with HP shipments fell by 4.4%, while Asus and Acer declined even more, as well as its market share. Garner explains that "political and economic uncertainties in some countries" as a result of dampened PC demand. Though, Levono and Dell saw substantial growth, with each account over 20% of PC market share.

It should be regarded that these figures are only estimates of the company since Apple has announced that it will not release specific iPhone, iPad and Mac sales data in the future. Looking into this year, a refresh to the MacBook Pro and Mac Pro is most likely to happen.
