Because of the way the App Store is running, Apple has recently undergone various antitrust investigations, such as Spotify accusing Apple of monopoly in Europe, and class actions against the monopoly of the App Store that Supreme Court allowed to proceed, etc.
Today, Apple has launched a new website dedicated to the App Store, clearly a response to these claims. Apple said that the App Store has only two objectives: "a safe and trustworthy place for customers to discover and download apps, and a great business opportunity for all developers."
Meanwhile, Apple also stated that the App Store welcomes competition and believes that competition will improve everything and enhance the overall app experience. The company also exemplified several third-party apps competing with their own apps, like Spotify vs. Apple Music, iMessage vs. Whatsapp, and more.
We believe competition makes everything better and results in the best apps for our customers. Finally, Apple noted that they have reviewed all apps and updates to ensure the developers follow strict privacy, design and business models guidelines and have removed more than 1.4 million apps since the App Store cleanup program was launched back in 2016. In total, Apple said that 84% of apps are free, though most charge fee through-app purchases. subscriptions, or supported by ads.
We also care about quality over quantity, and trust over transactions. That’s why, even though other stores have more users and more app downloads, the App Store earns more money for developers. Our users trust Apple — and that trust is critical to how we operate a fair, competitive store for developer app distribution.
