16-Inch MacBook Pro Announced, Here Is Everything To Know

It's here... Apple has announced its long-awaited 16-inch MacBook Pro via a Newsroom press release, the top-of-the-end machine features a large 16-Inch Retina Display, up to 80 percent faster performance and a new Magic Keyboard.

“Our pro customers tell us they want their next MacBook Pro to have a larger display, blazing-fast performance, the biggest battery possible, the best notebook keyboard ever, awesome speakers and massive amounts of storage, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro delivers all of that and more,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac and iPad Product Marketing. “With its brilliant 16-inch Retina display, 8-core processors, next-gen pro graphics, even better thermal design, new Magic Keyboard, six-speaker sound system, 100Wh battery, up to 8TB of storage and 64GB of fast memory, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the world’s best pro notebook.”

Larger Display

The most intuitive change to the new MacBook Pro is the bigger screen and the size extends to 16 inches. The length and width of the machine is 35.79* 24.59 cm, compared to 34.93* 24.07 cm of the 15-inch model. Since the display frame has become narrower, compared to the existing 15-inch model, the overall size alone does not increase significantly. By shrinking the bezels, Apple has doubled the aspect ratio. Other display features include up to 500 nits of brightness, P3 wide color gamut, a resolution of 3072x1920 and a higher pixel density of 226 ppi.

Scissor Keyboard Returns

After being replaced by the Butterfly Keyboard in 2015, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the first product that uses a Magic Keyboard with a refined scissor mechanism. Despite the light and thinness of the Butterfly keyboard, it is prone to failures like some keys become unresponsive and let dust easily enter in. Even though Apple subsequently updated the butterfly keyboard, the result is still not evident.

Apple claims the new keyboard's keystroke is 1.0 mm, in a way that can improve the previous hand's hard feeling. Therefore, although many scissor structure brands are used, through fine-tuning, Apple has created a new keycap structure. The arrangement of the scissor could lock the top of the keyboard into the keycap, minimizing the sensation of swinging. "The 16-inch MacBook Pro delivers a keyboard with a comfortable, satisfying and quiet typing experience," says Apple.

ESC Key Is Independent Of The Touch Bar

What differentiates the new Pro from the previous lineup is that it finally gets a separated "ESC" button (formerly on the Touch Bar). This detail should please many professional designers or developers. In addition, the Touch ID sensor on the right side of the keyboard is in the same location as the one on the MacBook Air, meaning that it is also separated from the Touch Bar.

Professional Level Performance

The 16-inch MacBook Pro features Intel's latest 9th-generation processors with up to 8 cores. It also has up to 64GB of RAM and up to 8TB of SSD storage. The premium laptop also uses the most advanced thermal architecture ever in a Mac notebook to enable the system to run at higher power for sustained periods. The sophisticated fan design features a larger impeller with extended blades along with bigger vents, resulting in a 28 percent increase in airflow, while the heat sink is 35 percent larger, enabling significantly more heat dissipation than before. Together, these advancements in cooling capacity allow the 16-inch MacBook Pro to sustain up to 12 more watts during intensive workloads than the previous design.

GPU & Storage

The new 16-inch MacBook Pro graphics processor has also been upgraded, comes with the AMD Radeon RX 5500M graphics card for the first time. The Radeon Pro 5000M GPUs are manufactured on a 7-nanometer process, claiming 1.5 times the performance per watt compared to previous structures. Coupled with the optimized heat dissipation structure, the power consumption of the GPU is 20% higher than before, and the graphics processing performance of the MacBook Pro has taken a big step.

For storage, the 16-inch MacBook Pro supports up to 64GB of DDR4 memory and 8TB of storage, and the standard SSD has 512GB and 1TB of capacity, twice the capacity of previous models. And provides up to 8TB of SSD, which is the largest SSD hard drive in all MacBooks.

Battery Life & Sound

The 100Wh battery on the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the largest ever in a notebook and delivers up to 11 hours of battery life.

Apple's highest-end notebook also features a completely redesigned six-speaker, a high-fidelity sound system designed to bring the most sophisticated audio experience ever to artists, podcasters and video editors in a notebook. New Apple-patented force-canceling woofers use dual opposite speaker drivers to reduce undesirable sound distorting vibrations. The result is that music sounds clearer and more natural than ever. An upgraded high-performance mic array delivers a 40 percent reduction in hiss and an improved signal-to-noise ratio that rivals that of popular professional-grade digital microphones, delivering super-clean recordings that capture even the quietest details.

Pricing & Availability

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is available today from Apple.com and the Apple Store app, starting at $2,399 in the U.S. It will be hit the Apple Store and Apple Authorized Resellers' shelf later this week and is "coming soon" to retail stores around the world, Apple says. The box contains a 96W higher-power adapter and is sold separately for $79, up from 15-inch MacBook Pro's 87W.
