Apple will launch four iPhones in the second half of 2020 that will feature the A14 Bionic processor with more powerful computing performance, as well as the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 modems, as per the report from Taiwanese publication China Times, citing supply chain sources.
The source pointed out that several countries' 5G networks may only support Sub-6GHz, while others may support Sub-6GHz and mmWave (millimeter wave) simultaneously.
Since Snapdragon X55 is currently the only 5G modem that supports both Sub-6GHz and mmWave and that is using TSMC's 7nm mass production, driven by Apple's strong demand, Qualcomm has aggressively secured 7nm production capacity in 2020, which is one of the crucial reasons as to why TSMC's 7nm capacity utilization is said to remain fully loaded in the first half of the year.
Notwithstanding, it's anticipated that Apple's A14 will use a 5-nanometer process, and Qualcomm X55 employs a 7-nanometer process, with these orders are already taken by TSMC. Among them, A14 will begin to enter mass production at the end of the second quarter of 2020 and cover one-third of TSMC 5nm production capacity.
Apple is optimistic that the iPhone 12 supporting 5G will drive strong replacement demand for iPhone 7/8 and other old device users. In general, the market is too positive that shipments will reach more than 100 million units. Manufacturers have estimated that Apple has contracted two-thirds of TSMC's 5nm production capacity, mass production will begin at the end of the second quarter of 2020.
Apple is expected to launch four iPhones next fall, including iPhone 12 with 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch OLED panels, iPhone 12 Pro with 6.1-inch OLED panel, and iPhone 12 Pro Max with 6.7-inch OLED panel. Rumors have it that iPhone 12 Pro/Pro Max will implement with a time-of-flight (ToF) camera and possibly redesign to the metal frame.
